Description
Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the deeper layers of our skin (the dermis). It helps to keep skin smooth and “plump” through its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. and it plays a critical role in the rapid repair of wounds and other skin conditions.
The starum corenum is the uppermost layer of the skin and is composed of densely packed disc shaped cells which form a barrier to keep contaminents out and keep water in. As we age the integrity of this barrier fails, to a greater or lesser degree, and the consequence of this loss of integrity is an increase in the amount of water lost from the skin (trans- epidemal water loss or TEWL). As a result of increased TEWL the skin becomes drier and loses volume making the complexion look drawn.
Applying Hyaluronic Acid to the skin will immediately hydrate the skin and restore some of the lost volume. As the skin is hydrated the skin will plump up leading to a reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles. But the application of hyaluronic acid doesn’t just give a temporary hydration boost, it can help repair the damaged stratum corneum so that TEWL is progressively reduced.
The diagram above shows the action of hyaluronic acid. As well as hydrating the skin the HA , as it penetrates the skin will circulate amongst the cells in the layer immediately below the stratum corneum and will create a reservoir of moisture that the skin can draw on to keep the uppermost layers hydrated.
Our serum contains two types of HA. Standard Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid (SMW) and Low Molecular Weight (LMW) Hyaluronic Acid. The SMW form is the standard weight used in the cosmetics industry as it has the capacity to form a gel like structure and so is the basis for HA serums. The LMW can not form a gel and remains water like in consistency and so is not used for serum bases. However the LMW possesses the ability to penetrate the skin more effectively than SMW (due to its smaller sized molecules. We combine the gelling abilities of SMK with the penetrative properties of LMW to create the perfect serum.
The serum can be applied direct to the skin or added to your existing creams and lotions.
